WHY WE ❤

HY
WE ❤ STATIONERY... What stationery promises is potential. People start a new notebook when they’re starting a new project or a new job, confident in the knowledge that this time they will be organised, or they will be better at keeping a diary. There’s something calming about a clean page, there’s no Twitter or Facebook to distract you, it’s easier to focus your thoughts. On a personal note, there’s something about being a control freak that makes it appeal. The main purpose of stationery is to organise and make things neater, so ultimately this makes us feel calmer. It also gives you the potential to be creative, put your own stamp on things, and to define our personalities and style. There’s such an incredible amount of variety in terms of colours, styles and sizes. It’s a way of expressing your personality at times when you have less artistic freedom, maybe at school or in the workplace. The notebook or pen you choose can say a lot about you. I know I feel kind of smug in meetings when I’m pull out my latest high tech pen to make notes and see someone eyeing it up! In the modern world of expensive technology, stationery is an inexpensive way to express yourself at work. The back-to-school feeling we enjoy while shopping for stationery expresses our desires for control and independence, according psychologist Emma Kenny. "As children we have few options for controlling our environment or expressing our individuality. Stationery is a way of doing this," she says. "As young people we often long for the seriousness of stationery and feel that it represents

ed independent." But worshipping at the altar of stationery isn’t just about indulging our inner child. There’s something genuine and authentic about writing by hand that’s often missing in digital communications. "A handwritten note says that somebody cared not only enough to write but took time out of their day to do so," says Jasmine Jones, international business development manager at Sheaffer. Whatever the reasons for our fascinations with stationery, we know there is no better feeling than having a desk full of gorgeous pens, pads and accessories that are guaranteed to make us more organised!
