workingEDGE January 2016 | 27 Regular Features BIRDS ON THE BLOG Everyone has them, but not everyone is willing to admit to theirs – half the time, people don’t even realise they have them! What am I talking about? Of course, I’m talking about bad habits! Whether you like to bite your toenails/fingernails, play with your hair when you feel nervous, or even tap your fingers idly on every available surface, everyone has some kind of bad habit or nervous twitch. I know that I have a couple, at least, that I’m personally aware of, and I try and limit how often I do them when I’m around people, but of course sometimes you can’t help but do it (unless it’s something like biting your toenails……something like that should always remain in your own home). Some people differ in opinion about what they consider to be bad habits – for example, I’ve been told before that dyeing my hair is a bad habit, and that I should settle on one colour and just leave it at that. I don’t really consider dyeing my hair a habit, bad or otherwise – I just get bored of having the same colour for too long, and why not experiment a bit while I’m young? It’s not a habit, I just like dyeing my hair and experimenting with colour, and to me it’s no different to experimenting with makeup or different clothing. However, I will admit to the fact I play with my hair a lot when I’m nervous – I do it almost unconsciously, and I’ll usually only realise if someone points it out to me, or I end up twisting the hair off my finger or something like that. I don’t know why I started doing it, but I can’t seem to stop it now – although I don’t think I used to do it when my hair was shorter, so maybe it’s just kind of like a security thing now I have longer hair, I don’t know. I also bite my nails when I’m stressed, which I really want to try and stop doing – I don’t bite them to the extent that I’m biting them off, but I’ll sometimes just bite my nails if I’m reading or if I’m on a long journey and I’m feeling nervous/don’t have my iPod with me (if I have my iPod with me, I usually end up winding the cables of my earphones through my fingers, I don’t think my hands like having nothing to do) and I really should stop because I don’t want to be a nail biter. Finally, it’s not really a bad habit, but I get really impatient with people sometimes for nothing – like, if I’m playing a really good game/reading an amazing book/listening to an album I really like, and I recommend it to someone and they’re not playing/reading/listening to my suggestion, sometimes I’m like “but just do it so we can chat about it and I can send you stuff that’s related to said thing that you will enjoy!” For example, I’m trying to get one of my friends to play a game at the moment so I can send them funny fan art that’s related to the game, but I can’t until they play it because it’ll contain spoilers so I’m just bugging them to play the game so I can send them stuff, haha. They’re the only bad habits I can think of at the moment, but I’m sure the people who know me will be able to come up with many more! I know I can name loads of bad habits the people around me have… What are some of your bad habits, if you’re willing to admit any?
